The Octopus House is where artistry, nature, and design converge to create a truly one-of-a-kind property. Featured in Austin Home Magazine’s inaugural "Great Outdoors Tour" and the 2023 Austin Outdoor Living Tour, this property is equal parts home, art exhibit, and magical retreat. Landscape Theory Studio was honored to collaborate on this extraordinary project, inspired by the homeowner’s vision to integrate local artistry and materials into the design.

The landscape is a feast for the senses. Waterfall limestone slabs grace the front curb, a trellis adorned with colorful glass baubles invites guests in, and natural crystals are thoughtfully placed throughout the property, blending seamlessly into the lush shade garden. Nestled within the natural beauty of the Bouldin Creek setting, the design harmonizes with the surrounding environment, creating a space that feels both imaginative and grounded.

From a functional perspective, innovative drainage solutions are the backbone of this full-scale landscape transformation. Hidden French drains and swales work together to manage stormwater flow, while two large water features complement these solutions with their thoughtful placement and dynamic movement. Forest floor plantings hug the waterfall, showcasing a beautiful balance between practical function and aesthetic design.

One of the most striking elements is the recirculating water feature, which echoes the site’s original erosion patterns and incorporates repurposed materials from the property. These details serve as both conversation pieces and tributes to the land’s history.

Designing the Octopus House was a labor of love for the Landscape Theory Studio team, and our efforts will soon be featured on an upcoming episode of Central Texas Gardener. This whimsical, innovative project stands as a testament to our commitment to merging art, function, and nature into landscapes that leave a lasting impression.
